Our Services

Interlocking Concrete Block Retaining Walls

Also known as Allan Block walls, interlocking blocks provide support to the soil and drainage system, as well as adding a beautiful decorative element to your property by building raised garden beds. This option is mortar-free, as the blocks fit together, working well for both small and large outdoor spaces.

Dry-Stacked Stone Retaining Walls

Dry-stacked stone walls use natural stones placed without mortar. Stability is guaranteed by precise placement, gravity and friction. That’s why it’s also called gravity retaining walls or simply gravity walls. This landscape structural support is strong up to 2 ft tall and offers a passive drainage system.

Garden Retaining Walls (Planters)

Planters are an excellent way to control erosion, create terraced landscapes for planting, maximize space, and are aesthetically pleasing retaining walls. It can be built from natural rock, concrete blocks and boulders, ranging from low borders to taller structures with different levels.

Boulder Retaining Walls

Boulders are detached rocks in various sizes and shaped by natural forces (erosion, water, and others). These stones hold back soil, providing support, erosion resistance, allowing water to drain naturally, and adding a natural look to your landscape design.

Wood Retaining Walls

Wood (timber) retaining walls are a practical option for small garden areas, and they’re usually a good, cost-effective option for smaller projects. At Coastal Design Landscaping, we build it using treated wood and proper drainage techniques to ensure maximum strength and long-term durability.

FAQs

1. Is a permit required to build a retaining wall?

You only need a permit if the wall is over 4′ high (1.2 meters). If your project is under this height, you don’t need a permit, but it still needs to comply with city regulations.

2. How much does a retaining wall project cost?

The costs for such a project vary depending on the type of wall, material, labour skills, landscaping features, wall height, and whether drainage is required to manage water runoff.

3. What options do you offer for stone or block walls?

You can choose from Allan Blocks (concrete retaining walls), dry-stacked stones, bulder, and bricks. Contact us for other retaining wall systems.  For a large selection of concrete blocks, please visit www.landscapecentre.com and for stone options visit www.landscapesupply.com.

4. Is a drainage system required behind the retaining walls?

In most cases, yes. A drainage system is required because water can build up behind walls and create pressure (hydrostatic pressure), which often leads to cracks, erosion, and wall collapse.

5. What styles and colours do you offer?

Once we have been approved to work together, we will meet again for a preconstruction meeting in which all material details will be discussed and finalized.  Please refer to the links above for stone or block selections.

6. How is the process of a proper retaining wall construction?

Usually, the process starts with a site assessment, followed by planning, design, and excavation if necessary. Next, we build the first level of blocks or stones, install drainage, interleave subsequent layers of blocks, backfill and compact soil. Finally, we finish the project by adding final details such as planting and lighting.

7. Why did my retaining wall collapse?

This happened likely because of poor drainage, which causes high water pressure and overload, improper design, poor soil issues, tree roots, poor construction, or aging retaining walls.

8. What are the requirements for +4′ tall walls?

To build a retaining wall higher than 4′, your project needs to be designed by a licensed engineer. You’ll also need a permit from your city.

9. Does my home insurance cover damage to a retaining wall?

If the damage was caused by natural forces, like ground movement and flooding, or even by neglect, the home insurance likely won’t cover the costs to fix it. It might cover damage from fire, lightning, car hits, or vandalism. We recommend checking your insurance policy for more information.

10. If there’s a retaining wall between two properties, who is responsible for it?

It depends, but usually the homeowner who has their land retained by the wall is the responsible person. If the wall is entirely located on one side of the property line, the owner of that side is responsible for it.
